Conversion of Compound Sentences to Simple Sentences

This topic primarily introduces the Conversion of Compound Sentences to Simple Sentences and conversion of compound sentences to simple sentences. All the answers are for Total English textbook for class 11. Any student whose school does not use this textbook may treat these sentences as practice.😄 So, without further ado, let's give you your answers.

 Conversion of Compound sentences to Simple Sentences

Compound sentences may be changes into simple sentences as follows:-

1. By substituting a Particle: [A particle is a word that has a grammatical function but does not fit into the main parts of speech (i.e. noun, verb, adverb).]

Compound - He finished his work and went home.
Simple - Having finished his work, he went home.

2. By substituting a Prepositional Phrase for a Clause: [Every prepositional phrase is a series of words made up of a preposition and its object. ] [A clause is a unit of grammatical organization next below the sentence in rank and in traditional grammar said to consist of a subject and predicate.]

Compound - She cleaned the statue and then decorated it.
Simple - After cleaning the statue, she decorated it.

3. By substituting an Infinitive for a Clause [Infinitive is the basic form of a verb, without an inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense]
Compound - Either you must confess your fault, or you will be punished.
Simple - You must confess your fault to escape punishment.

Assignment 

1. A. He changed his clothes and went for a walk.
B. Having changed his clothes, he went for a walk.

2. A. I called her, but she gave me no answer.
B. She gave not answer to my call.

3.A. You must work hard, or you will not succeed.
B. You must work hard to succeed.

4. A. Not only was he set free, but also given some money.
B. He was sent free with some money.

5. A. He was ill and therefore he could not go to school.
B. He could not go to school because of his illness.

6.A. She is very poor, but she does not complain.
B. In spite of being poor, she does not complain.

7.A. They finished their work and went to play.
B. Having finished their work, they went to play.

8. A. The ship went down, yet the passengers were saved.
