 Conversion of Simple Sentences to Compound Sentences

A simple sentence can be changed into a Compound one, by expanding a word or a phrase into a Coordinate Clause:

Simple - Besides being clever, he is hardworking.
Compound - He is not only clever, but also hardworking.

Simple - In spite of his riches, he is unhappy.
Compound - He is very rich, but he is unhappy.

Simple - He must leave early to catch the flight.
Compound - He must leave early, or he will not catch the flight.

Simple - Besides making a promise, he kept it.
Compound - He not only made a promise, but also kept it.

Simple - Failing prompt payment, the goods must be returned.
Compound - You must either pay the bill at once or return the good.

Simple - Notwithstanding his hard work, he did not succeed.
Compound - He worked hard, yet he did not succeed.

Assignment 

1. In spite of being poor, he is honest.
Compound - He is poor, yet he is honest.

2. Looking at the crowd, he dived into the sea.
Compound - He looked at the crowd, and he dived into the sea.

3.She was weak owing to ill health.
Compound - She was weak, because she was ill.

4. Being a cripple, he cannot ride a bicycle.
Compound - He is unable to walk properly, so he cannot ride a bicycle.

5. Running fast, he got out of breath.
Compound - He was running fast, so he got out of breath.

6.To make certain of getting a place, you must apply early.
Compound - For making sure that you get a place, you must apply early for it.

7.The sun having risen, the fog disappeared.
Compound - As the sun rose, the fog disappeared.

8.He was honoured because of his learning.
Compound - He was honoured, as he was highly learned.
